HIV/AIDS

India is home to about one-third of people living with HIV in Asia. Considering infection status in absolute numbers, it has the third position in the world after South-Africa and Nigeria. According to National Aids Control Organization (NACO), while overall the HIV epidemic shows a stable trend in the recent years, there is variation between states and population groups. In Tamil Nadu and other southern states with high HIV burden where effective interventions have been in place for several years, HIV prevalence has begun to decline or stabilize according to NACO and UNAIDS. The 2006 surveillance data has identified pockets of high prevalence in the northern states and show an increase in HIV infection among several groups at higher risk such as people who inject drugs and men who have sex with men.

National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India has chalked out a detailed programme implementation plan for its third phase from 2007 to 2012 with the primary goal to halt and reverse the epidemic in India over this period by integrating programmes for prevention, care, support and treatment. UNAIDS as well as various international organizations and civil society organizations support the national program in its efforts along with the State AIDS Control Societies and district level units in prevention, care, support and treatment.
